Two new programs with Books Forever Yours

A Book Exchange
The first program is a way for students to exchange books with each other that they have already read or have out grown. In the past, the exchange has taken place in conjunction with a Reading Night event. The idea is to have your school hold a book drive for a week or two before the Reading Night. The books collected during the book drive are given out to everyone attending the event including siblings. We have held book exchanges at Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln Heights, and Roosevelt Elementary schools. If your school does not currently have a Reading Night event, we highly encourage you to do so and would be happy to help you organize one. The book exchange does not need to be done at this time. Perhaps it could be done in the classroom with the teacher encouraging students to bring in books they want to trade or a school wide exchange could take place at a central location in the school. The point is not where the exchange happens but that children are exposed to genres and authors they may never have had a chance to experience before at no additional expense to them or their families.

Reading to Preschoolers
The second program is a chance for students to read to preschoolers. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience reading out loud to a very appreciative young person. The preschoolers looks up to the elementary children and the students feel like they are .big. kids helping the little ones learn to love reading. We can work with you to find a preschool within walking distant of your school - we know how hard it is to come by bus transportation. If leaving the school is not desirable, then maybe you have a preschool in your building or an older classroom that would like to read to the kindergarten class. The premise is to have a student read to a younger child. Currently, one Saint Georges and two Jefferson Elementary classrooms participate in this program. We provide books for the students to use during the reading time and then the books are left with the preschool so that each child receives a book to take home.
